The Loxahatchee River is Florida's first federally designated "Wild and Scenic River." Explore with our guide this unique river that defines the undisturbed qualities of Jupiter. You will quickly understand why the Federal Government chose this river, above all others, to receive that designation. Visiting the Loxahatchee River is visiting 1800's Florida. You will learn history, see wildlife, and put names to plants along the shore.
Recent archaeological digs have uncovered indications that the banks of the river were populated as far back as 2,500 years ago. More recently, Seminoles settled where Riverbend County Park presently exists, which has now become a Designated Historical District. Here, Apeika (Sam Jones), a Seminole canoe builder, lived and eventually fought U.S. troops and Tennessee Volunteers at the First and Second Battles of the Loxahatchee.
Your guide will explore with you the Battlefield sites, Seminole settlements and the old military road leading from Fort Jupiter to Lake Okeechobee. Next, we will canoe the "Wild and Scenic" section of the river, watching for animals and talking about the mixture of Tropical and Subtropical vegetation. Great birding opportunities abound along the Loxahatchee.
